Le 4 novembre, alors que les médias américains avaient les yeux rivés sur les élections, Israël a brisé la trêve en tuant 7 militants palestiniens (meurtres justifiés par la discutable raison que le Hamas creusait des tunnels pour prendre en otages des soldats israéliens), en sachant très bien que cette opération aller provoquer le Hamas et l’obliger à riposter.
« Les tunnels creusés la semaine dernière, pour, apparemment, prendre des soldats israéliens en otages, » rapporte le Haaretz mi-novembre, « ne représentaient pas un danger clair et immédiat :
leur existence était connue et leur usage aurait pu être évité du côté israéliens, ou au moins, les soldats en poste à côté auraient pu, tout simplement, être éloignés du danger.
Il est impossible de déclarer que ceux qui ont décidé de faire exploser les tunnels l’ont fait sans arrière-pensée.
Le commandement militaire était tout à fait conscient des implications de cet acte, tout autant qu’il est clair que la politique de « l’entrée contrôlée » dans une partie étroite de la bande de Gaza mène au même résultat :
la fin de la trêve. C’était une manœuvre politique, pas une décision tactique d’un commandant sur le terrain. [36] »
Après la reprise prévisible des tirs de roquettes du Hamas « en guise de riposte » (Centre d’Information du Terrorisme et du Renseignement Israélien) [37], Israël a pu entreprendre une autre invasion meurtrière pour faire échouer, une fois de plus, une nouvelle offensive de paix palestinienne.
